Travel north through the Piedmont’s Foothills of North Carolina along Highway 52 through Stokes County and you will see in the distance an ancient sentinel, the magnificent Pilot Mountain. This unique rock formation has risen above the rolling hills of northwestern North Carolina through the seasons, through the centuries, through the ages, a pilot, a landmark which has guided foot, horse-drawn, and motorized travelers alike over the years. Cross the Surry County line and on your left looms this quiet giant home to countless wildlife, flora, and fauna. Now a state park, this beautiful setting is available to all who wish to hike, bike, or drive up the mountain to take in the spectacular views of the surrounding counties of North Carolina below and a portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian Mountain Chain in the distance. On a clear day, one can make out the Blue Ridge Parkway which is shared by both North Carolina and Virginia.

A short few miles away up Highway 52 North along the Andy Griffith Parkway brings the traveler to another vista. As one continues on, the road rises and falls, eventually dramatically dipping downward and revealing a town nestled in a valley at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. At dusk, the city’s lights glitter like diamond dust filling a bowl surrounded by purplish-blue mountains leaving a hint of an incredible sunset. Here lies the small city of Mount Airy, home to Andy Griffith, Donna Fargo, Betty Lynn and countless others who have made it their home. And now, hopefully, you.
